While we hadn´t planned to visit Uruguay, it was only a 3hr boat trip from Buenos Aires Argentina, so we couldn`t miss the opportunity to explore this tiny country, it´s literally only 5-6hrs to drive across Uruguay, from Argentina to Brazil! We hired a car for 4 day`s and cruised the countryside in search of the infamous surf spots! Uruguay is such a cool country, we had a great time!
Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay) sit opposite each other near the mouth of a very large river (so wide that you can`t see the other side). Hence, Uruguay`s beaches run along the south of the country (but these beaches are a mixture of sea water and river water). Once you hit a town called Punta del Este, you are in the open ocean and the coast line starts to run along the eastern border until you hit Brazil. also, Uruguay sits on a similar latitude to Mendoza (Argentina) and Australias wine growing regions (Margaret River, Barossa and Hunter-ish).
Montevideo is full of old medieval style buildings, with modern art splashed about every street corner. We found an amazing restaurant with the most tender steaks cooked on a wood fired BBQ, parilla. It´s the done thing here! red meat cooked on an open fire 3 times a day! even the woolworths have a wood fired BBQ to cook fresh sausages and steaks for you while you wait.
we drove east along the southern coast admiring the lush green countryside, not realising that they were deep into the rain season and that certain roads were flooded... including the road we were traveling on! but it made for a good adventure! we also crossed a river by ferry, but the ferry had broken so there was a little tinny boat towing the ferry back and forth.
...then we found the surf... La Paloma and Punta del Diablo were gorgeous spots and we began to wish we had more time! i know, its ironic, but one year is seriously too short a time period to see it all!
Back to Buenos Aires for one night before we hit Mendoza and the vineyards! We met a local called Emilio on the boat back to Buenos Aires who kindly invited us to lunch at his house with his beautiful family.
