chris and i have spent the last few days slowly heading east into the peruvian highlands. we spent a couple of day´s in Chiclayo exploring the pyramids built in 300AD and in 2 museums displaying all the beautiful arts, crafts, archutecture and artefacts of the anciant civilisation and how their cultures evolved over 2000 years.
Chachapoyas and Kuelup are two little villages up in the Peruvian highlands. We found a traditional restaurant for new years and watched the locals let off fireworks and burn scarecrows as a symbol of letting go of the yera past and inviting the new year. We walked to a beautiful canyon over 1000m deep just outside of Chacha. We visited another of the inca ruins in Kuelup, second in beauty only to machupitchu, apparently. It was stunning. Ann and Alan, you would have loved it! The ruins were packed with wild llama.. we were walking up a very narrow, very steep path and sudenly ten llama came running down, almost knocking us over. We hiked 6hrs to a magnificant waterfall called Gocta, 700m tall and stunning!
Tarapoto is our last stop before we venture into the Amazon. It´s a busy little town, with stunning views. We spent the afternoon white water rafting yesterday, grade 1,2 and 3 rapids. It was the perfect way to see the river Mayo, there were calm patches where we could take in the scenery.. and go for a dip, as well as turbulent patches... one of which caused us to lose 2 passengers... but we saved them!
