We spent just one night in Rio for the beginning of Carnival, and i´m so glad we did!
Rio is not particularly safe. There are lots of muggings, mostly with weapons... but we were with a local, and stayed out of the dangerous areas. One of our mates even got held at knife piont for his Kebab... weird!
We did the tourist thing, visited christ the redeemer, etc. We caught up with Dani and partied in the Lapa region. The street packs with people and little side stalls selling beer cocktails and food. All the bars had live bands and salsa music with crowds spilling onto the street... the city was pumping! We danced salsa all night! Dani even taught me to shake my butt brazilian style!
almost missing our flight, we finally made it to Salvador!
i can not even begin to describe the Carnival that is Salvador! Imagine the Big Day Out... now make it 5 million people, put them on the one street for 6 days, have the music pumping, and i mean at hair cell thrashing volumes from 11am till 6am every day for 6 days... it`s nuts! there is no way you are getting one moment of sleep for the entire week!
the carnival works in a few ways. there are 3 main sites in Salvador, one is more family friendly (Pelarinho), one is a massive street party (Barra) ... and we never found the third!
Pelarinho is full of kids in full costume, its still nuts, but at a slower pace. live music, dancers in traditional costume, good food, beers and cigars... if you are that way inclined!
Barra is the massive street party! our hostel was on the main drag where the street parade continued for 24hrs a day ALL WEEK! we met some awesome people, partied hard and desperately needed sleep when it all ended!
the main street (Barra) has three ways to enjoy the Carnival, 1) Blocko - it sounds weird, but its a massive truck that they deck out with lights and speakers, and they put a band and some dancers on top of it. you can buy t-shirts to be allowed to dance within the roped off area with the truck... it takes 5hrs for the truck to get from one end to the other, so you´re dancing hard for 5 hrs. we did one towards the end of the week, it was awesome... but absolutely exhausting!
One of our friends that we just met here in the hostel (who coincidentaly works for another hearing aid company in Australia) bought a shirt for one of these truck parties, not realising that it was the gay float... after 20mins he came running back saying he couldn´t stand the groping anymore!
2) Camarotches - which are kinda like private parties, they usually include food, beers, cocktails, water, etc. they are situated on the main street, so you have a perfect view of the trucks going past, the music busting out of the speakers and the people dancing their hearts out! when there`s a lul between the trucks, the private DJ starts up and helps the atmosphere! we did this most nights.
3) the third option is to just cruise the streets, take in the music from the streets, trucks, camarotches, and the general atmosphere. this is a great option, but not the safest! you`ve not seen a meat market till you`ve partied the streets of Salvador during Carnival! `No´ doesn´t seem to register with the locals, even wearing a fake wedding ring AND holding Chris´ hand didn`t stop boys from trying... its crazy. and it doesn`t matter if you`re male, female, or 150yrs old, you will have people all over you constatly... the streets are just a grope fest... needless to say, we only spent a few short moments checking out the local sceen before retreating to the safety of our hostel!

on sunday we... technically... attended church, as we joined a blocko with someone preaching overmasked with awesome dance music, and over 2000 people dancing their hearts out at 11am! not a bad hangover cure, and an awesome way to start the day!
February 21st is dad´s birthday, so we celebrated in his honour with Brazilian Cigars, beers, music, Capoweira and fiesta!

We are currently in Salvcador for the week of Carnival... it the biggest party ever! millions of people from around the world! there is so much energy! the music starts at 11am in the morning, the parade gets going at around 5pm and finishes at 4 am-ish, but the music pumps till well into the morning... and it is haircell busting LOUD! it´s nut´s! Imagine the Big Day out crowd pumping for 6 days straight! no joke! Over 5 million people squshed into one street party, $1 beers sold on the street. our hostel is on the main street so we can see the mayhem from our balcony, or suck it up and get amongst it! its insane!
